But other times it’s not so easy to tell. And if you haven’t had your roof inspected by a professional in a while, then there may be some issues developing that should be handled to preserve the integrity of your roof and building structure.
At Wilson Roofing, we want to help and educate our customers on what to look for so that bigger issues with your roof do not develop.
It’s always a good idea, even if you haven’t had any problems, to at least have your roof inspected by a roofing professional every 10 years or so. You can call Wilson Roofing today at (970) 871-0442 for a completely free, no obligation inspection and consultation.
This just ensures that your roof is working as effectively as it should…after all, your roof is your line of defense for your entire building structure from all of the elements Mother Nature throws our way here in the Yampa Valley.
But besides calling a trained professional, there are a few things you can do to check out your roof yourself. And, it’s typically pretty easy to check this stuff out, and if you see potential problems, then go ahead and give us a call.
Things to look for:
- Look closely at all the edges of your roof and make sure all the edges are free of obstructions. This includes making sure your gutters are all clean, flowing and draining properly. This also includes making sure there aren’t any tree branches or vines or other plants that have either grown over the edges of your roof or are hanging above your roof where they could damage the edges if they were to fall.
- Check your attic, especially the high places in your attic, with a high powered flashlight. The main thing your looking for when you do this is water damage. You can tell you have water damage when you see discoloration, soft spots, wet insulation or if there are signs of mold. Often, by inspecting your attic regularly, you can spot problems that can be easily repaired before they escalate into more costly damage. Also, when inspecting your attic, it’s best to do it during the day time so you can look for any tiny spots of light that might be coming through. Because if light is coming through, you can bet all the other elements are as well.
- Also keep an eye on the inside of your home for damage, particularly water damage. Again the obvious signs include discoloration of walls or ceilings or corners, bulges or bubbles in walls, and even damages or misshapen baseboards. Keep in mind that water will travel down water groove it can find, so you might find signs of a damaged roof looking at the floor of your home. And also always keep an eye on any fixtures or features that connect to or lead out your roof, including chimneys, skylights, vents, etc.
- Lastly, have a professional roofer check the surfaces of your roof. For safety reasons, we really don’t want you getting out on your roof. But a professional roofer can do an inspection of your surfaces and give you a full report on anything that may not be visible from an inspection done from the ground.
